Some 182 million Americans are expected to shop at stores and websites this weekend as the holiday season arrives. Photo: Bing Guan/Bloomberg NewsIf your goal is to score the best deals and discounts on your holiday shopping, it likely pays to hit the snooze button. There are some Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals, of course. Retailers want to get you in the door, and then get you to spend more.

Right Now Is a Bad Time to Spend Money

The National Retail Federation forecasts holiday spending will grow to as much as $966.6 billion this year. Photo: frederic j. brown/Agence France-Presse/Getty ImagesPrices remain high for much of what we buy, even as inflation has slowed. Stingily saving money, meanwhile, is a more profitable activity than it has been in recent memory. Since the Federal Reserve raised interest rates to a two-decade high, any dollar spent today is a lost opportunity to earn as much as 5% or more in savings accounts, certificates of deposit and bonds. High rates also make it significantly more expensive for people to spend money they don’t have, with the annual interest rate on some credit cards pushing 30%.

Changes to the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or Fafsa, will allow people to make contributions to their 401(k) without it impacting the amount of financial aid they receive. WSJ personal-finance reporter Oyin Adedoyin joins host J.R. Whalen to discuss. PHOTO: ISTOCKWASHINGTON—Senators are taking fresh aim at legacy and donor preferences for admission to college, as advantages given to certain students and groups come under increasing scrutiny following a recent Supreme Court ruling striking down the use of race in college admissions. and Tim Kaine (D., Va.)—called the MERIT Act—would try to end legacy admissions at colleges and universities. The bipartisan legislation would add a new standard for accreditation under the Higher Education Act that would prohibit institutions from giving preferential treatment during the admissions process based on an applicant’s relationship to alumni or donors.

Many families struggle with giving priority to saving for college and retirement. Photo: ISTOCKFaced with the gargantuan cost of higher education, Americans often have to choose between securing their children’s future or their own. A new rule change makes it slightly easier to do both. Pretax contributions made to retirement accounts will no longer count as income in the formula that measures a family’s ability to pay for college, under changes to this year’s Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or Fafsa. The Education Department made the changes to simplify the form and ensure more aid goes to those who need it most.

Want to get a tax-free return on your money? Put sewers and subway systems in your portfolio. The municipal bonds that state and local governments sell to pay for unsexy-sounding infrastructure projects are offering their highest yields in more than a decade. New bond investors snapped up Treasurys after interest rates surged this year, but the special tax advantages of muni bonds make them also worth a look, financial advisers say.

China's Gen Z is broke. And America's Gen Z is in rough shape financially too, though not as bad as US millennials. They're sharing photos of savings accounts on Weibo and paychecks on TikTok, respectively, to prove it. Rather than sharing screenshots of their bank accounts, TikTok users in the US are dishing on details of their weekly paychecks, including itemized breakdowns of where every dollar goes. And unemployment rates among China's Gen Z are at a record high; the generation has been dubbed China's "unluckiest generation."
Some brave souls are trying a novel strategy to tackle the age-old struggle to stop living paycheck to paycheck: itemizing their spending for all to see on TikTok. In short videos, people begin by revealing their take-home pay, and in under 60 seconds whittle it down to near zero by enumerating the bills for food, rent, credit cards, utilities, saving and streaming. Described as “payday routines,” they go into minute detail on spending on groceries, dining out, drinks, car payments and travel. The hashtag #paydayroutine has 52.9 million views to date.
The Ways You Can Be a Better Parent

At The Wall Street Journal’s Future of Everything Festival, participants stressed establishing boundaries with children and building their confidence. One way of embracing the future of parenting is to take a step beyond examining kids’ emotional and physical health and acting deliberately to promote it. The importance of action was central throughout several parenting sessions at The Wall Street Journal’s Future of Everything Festival this week.
